Understanding the Town of Smoky Lake’s population and how it is changing over time is important to establish effective growth and development strategies. In the past three decades, Smoky Lake has not seen significant population growth but the Town’s population has remained relatively stable at approximately 1,000 residents. Between 1996 and 2011, the population fell from 1,087 to 1,022.
Population projections prepared by the Government of Alberta suggest the region around the Town of Smoky Lake will not see significant population increases over the next forty years. It further suggests that most of the population increase will be the result of migration from other parts of Canada and the world.
Assuming provincial population projections are accurate, the Town of Smoky Lake is likely to see slight but steady population growth over the next few decades.
