One year has past since Smoky Lake elected a new coucil. Do you feel they are representing the town responsibly?

Smoky Lake Signal
I was just wondering if I was the only one who thinks it is wrong for the owner of the local newspaper to also be a councilor. Isn't this a conflict of interest?

Confused... Not me...
Thanks for that explanation, Santa's Elf... However, in a town the size of Smoky Lake, practically ANY business will be financially affested by council decisions. The procedure for dealing with this is VERY clear. THe affected councillor must declare his conflict, and not take part in any debate or discussion regarding the matters he/she has a "pecuniary interest" in. He or she may NOT vote on those matters either. If citizens dispute the actions taken, they are free to file a complaint for investigation by the courts, just as has happened in Thorhild.
Being in business is NOT, nor should it be, an automatic impediment to serving your community on council. As for the pay issues, I believe that what was being implied was that working for one level of government and also being on Town council could in itself be a conflict...
It is easy to criticise someone else's efforts, but if you take an objective view of things, you might learn to appreciate those who do step forward to serve.

Apology
The Town and Council of Smoky Lake would like to apologize to Hank(non-ratepayer) and the Fire Department and any others that may have been offended or anyone who has taken offense to any blogs posted on the town website. The Town is encouraging an open forum free from all prejudice and the comments made are in no manner the views or opinions of the Town Council and Administration.
Merry Christmas

Salvation Army Store...
Apparently, the store will end its retail business on March 24th. The Edmonton administrator is the one to contact if you are unhappy with this decision, which was made by the Toronto office.
If anyone is starting a petition to protest the closure, please post the locations on here, so that we can get the word out as quickly as possible.
The Signal will be keeping readers informed as much as possible, but it will be up to the residents who believe in our community to try to keep this vital part of the economy open!

grass
In all my 60 years of living I have never heard of a grass lenght bylaw. Doesn't our town manager have any thing better to do. Look at our roads and side walks this winter. The town manager has been here for a year, has he gone door to door and introduced himself so people would know who he is? Has any one else heard of a grass lenght bylaw? Really. Smoky Lake Tax Payer

Yeah for Smoky Lake Sales & Service!
Smoky Lake Sales & Service MADE it through the big GMC down-sizing cuts last week. I feel they should be commending as a small business that really supports our community. They must be doing something right to be sustainable in these times.
Their closure would have been a big loss to our Town.

CAO
Well the latest rumor is shocking! I knew that this town council had some problems but I never knew they were so heartless and dense. It looks like they have gotten rid of yet another CAO - that makes two since they have been voted into office. What is wrong here? This last guy I thought was good. He was turning the town around, building a house in our community and willing to relocate his family(I think he just had a baby as well). Well, I think it is time to seriously consider our options as ratepayers. I think we all have the same thing on our minds - AMALGAMATION! I can't think of better time - obviously this council has no idea what they are doing so I think it is time for us - the ratepayer to step up and make things right.

Another Perspective
Bravo to Pat! And Kathy, perhaps Pat's post could lend itself to the several other examples of why AMALGAMATION for this wonderful town would effectively reduce your democratic right as an Albertan and a Canadian. As a town, citizens have more local democratic representation than as a County. And you must take pride in that. Many citizens of Canada, let alone the World, do not even get to vote for local government. Furthermore, if this town can weather every possible economic downturn in recent history and still continue to serve thousands of people, maybe the people you have been electing are essentially doing a good job. Lets not be quick to assume your elected officials simply got "rid of yet another CAO." Perhaps, the Mayor and Council had good reason to terminate Mr. Carney. Do not be quick to judge. The Mayor and Council now have an opportunity to bring in better administrative leadership to this TOWN (not County) and to keep THE TOWN OF SMOKY LAKE on the map of ALBERTA, CANADA. The Mayor and Council have a chance to prove your votes were meaningful. Besides, the worst that could happen is you render your votes in the coming years, and elect new representation. After all, this scenario is far better than amalgamation, which would remove a perfectly functioning piece of Canadian democracy off the map!
