I think it is nice to see the pumpkins - The pumpkins have put the town on the map. Is there something else we could be recognized for?

Love the Pumpkin
I come to the pumpkin festival with the kids, its the main, and currently the only reason that i come to your town. I think it is great and the kids love it.

Great Time!
I do not live in S.L. but make a point of attending the pumpkin festival when ever I can. There is so much to see and do and my 'city slicker friends' love it! This is a much better weekend for it too...keep doing it.

Pumpkins Rule!
A superlative event. One of the BEST in Alberta, and we've been to a lot.

In regards to "is that all you have here"?
Yes, it is. Try being a teenager living here with nothing but pumpkins. No wonder we all want to get out as soon as we graduate.

It was there...right beside Smoky Lake Inn which is opposite Store Number 7 (The only store that opens till late 7 days a week)...
It was later on driven close to CIBC bank branch opposite ATB Financial.
There was rumor that the owner wants to open a sports bar in Smoky Lake downtown...

Pumpkins
There is a lot more to Smoky Lake. The is Heritage weeken, Christmas Light up to name afew. Why do you assume someone else should do something so you can use it! How about you and yours doing something.

No matter how big the town is "There is "nothing to do". My teenagers said the same thing. If you are bored, try starting up a new attraction / interest /make a splash in the town. If you have a passion, make a go of it!!

That's certainly easier said than done.
Everytime that we young people in Smoky Lake come up with an idea to make this small town bearable, it's shot down, or underfunded, or never followed through. For those of us who aren't athletic or up for going to the Youth Center, there are so few outlets. Even the community theatre is not enough. Yeah, Edmonton's not that far, but doesn't that mean we're being pushed away from Smoky Lake if we're being recommended to Edmonton for extra-curriculars?

I don't live in Smoky Lake, but my Baba does and I have spent years visiting her. I would consider myself a small part of the town. However, I don't know what it would be like to live their permanently. I can imagine that it would get pretty boring. I live in Edmonton and I get bored!

Get involved!
From some of the comments posted on here, most of the teenagers claim they are "bored" and "there is nothing to do"... Same thing that their parents said, and their parents before them!
The big difference is, the parents and grandparents didn't dare say that to their parents - they would have been given things to do so they wouldn't get "bored"!
How about you think of things you want to see happen here, write them down and try to get support for your ideas? That also includes at least some effort at funding them besides asking the Town or others to pay your way. Council might consider having a Youth Advisory Board if there was enough responsible interest in trying to actually DO something rather than just complain or take off...

get involved
well Mark W, you say write it down. to what would this help. i remember roughly 35yrs ago walking in lions club walkaton for raising money for swimming pool. where did it get us.i remember other people wanting to open car same thing , know we have a nice car wash , but how long before they start asking town for more assistance @ tax payers expence

Get involved! Part 2
r.w, yoou describe a few things that are certainly unfortunate, but all they prove is that if you are going to make changes in town, *you* have to be responsible for making those changes.
The fundraising for the swimming pool- why was it not restricted inuse when it was turned over to hte town, so that it had to be used for that purpose, or returned to the donors?
The new car wash - this is a private business, do you expect that ALL private businesses in town will come to council asking for taxpayer funding?
I still say: Write your ideas down, plan out how to do them, set yourself a realistic budget , and THEN go to the service clubs, or FCSS, or the Town, ot the County EDO to get their help. This willget you a lot farther than whining about being 'bored".

Get ready for more pumpkins!
Its obvious some people in our community don't know how important the Pumpkin Fair is to promoting our county. Go anywhere in Alberta and when you mention "Smoky Lake" they immediately respond "the Pumpkins".
Get a better attitude and get involved in supporting what we have!

Pumpkins! (of course)
I think I am the only person in this town who doesn't have a pumpkin. What a halloween day tragedy!
I love this blog, there is so much drama! It's fantastic
Hope all is well with you
