2020 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards

2020 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards – Deadline extended to October 6, 2020

While this has been an exceptionally challenging time for all Albertans, the spirit of volunteerism continues to be a beacon of hope in our communities. The Stars of Alberta Awards recognize the amazing volunteers in our communities and we need your help to nominate those volunteers! The submission deadline has been extended to October 6, 2020.

The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards highlight the value of volunteerism and publicly recognize the ongoing essential work and contributions of volunteers in supporting strong, vibrant, and diverse communities. Since the first awards were presented in 2000, 127 Albertans of all ages from communities across the province have been honoured. Six awards are presented annually, two in each category of youth, adult, and senior, at the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards ceremony.

This year, the new Breaking Barriers category will recognize outstanding volunteers who have contributed through their volunteering activities, advocacy and/or leadership to promote equality or to reduce barriers for marginalized groups. Three additional awards will be given to individuals or groups who are opening doors in their communities to address racism, advocate for LGBTQ2S+ inclusion and fighting gender discrimination. This is an opportunity to celebrate those outstanding individuals who work tirelessly to ensure that our communities are more inclusive and better each day.

Nominations for the 2020 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards are open and I encourage you to submit the names of those remarkable volunteers in your organization, school, and community. As with previous years the Stars of Alberta Awards will be presented at a special ceremony at Government House in Edmonton on December 4, 2020. This celebration is scheduled to coincide with International Volunteer Day, which falls on Saturday, December 5, 2020.

Detailed information on the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards program can be found online at www.alberta.ca/stars-awards. A copy of the 2020 nomination form is also enclosed. The extended deadline for nominations is October 6, 2020.

Share your volunteer story and let it inspire others!

Health Advisory Council

The Lakeland Communities Health Advisory Council (HAC) invites you attend a virtual Community Conversation on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. This is an opportunity to learn more about Health System Integration initiatives (Formerly Enhancing Care in the Community) whose goal is to help people be as healthy, well and independent as they can be in their homes and communities.

Participants will be invited to share their experiences and perspectives with Dr. Richard Lewanczuk, Senior Medical Director with Alberta Health Services. Dr. Lewanczuk is seeking community input as AHS prioritizes community-based health.

The session will be via Zoom and runs from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Please register for the session here: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAkceGrqz8jHdMPT5p5OpwZdtoRl-qHdA36

Public participation is essential to improving the quality and accountability of health services in Alberta. Health Advisory Councils play an important role in supporting the strategic direction of AHS by engaging members of their communities in a respectful, transparent and accountable manner. Working in partnership with AHS is an important way to ensure that services are more responsive to the needs of those who use them.

New broadband Internet service soon available

Dear Resident:
The Town of Smoky Lake is now in the Pre-Launch phase of our municipal broadband Internet service. As of this notice, the tower has been completely outfitted, testing has been partially completed and we are awaiting final steps before we go live. As we get closer to the live date we are looking for early adopters to connect to the system. Ideally, you would be able to run some basic tests and provide feedback to us as needed. You could be a business in need of better service or a resident with some tech-savvy or anyone in between. Businesses can create a second connection or avoid downtime and residential clients can switch over from another Internet provider or have the second service.

Initial testing will provide limited speeds and once we go live, early adopters will get their first month of full service would be free. We expect to be live and providing full service no later than August 1, 2020
