The Town of Smoky Lake wishes to notify residents of proposed changes to The Smoky Lake Mineral Rights Development Company Limited (the “Corporation”), a corporation solely owned by the Town of Smoky Lake. The Corporation was established in 1969 and continued under the Alberta Business Corporations Act in 1984. The Corporation was originally established for purposes relating to the exploration and development of natural resources. The Town now proposes to expand the services offered by the Corporation to include other economic development business opportunities including:

•Undertaking, supporting, or investing in the development of affordable housing in the Town of SmokyLake. This may include procuring the construction of affordable housing units for sale to the public or which the Corporation may lease through long or short term rentals to help meet the outstanding need for affordable housing in the Town of Smoky Lake.

•Undertaking, supporting, or investing in the development, ownership or operation of other short term rental accommodation, including to help attract tourists to the Town of Smoky Lake, provided such rentals or lodging offer new or unique services as opposed to competing with any existing accommodation services in the Town of Smoky Lake.

•Undertakings or investments related to the attraction of physicians and other professionals to the Town of Smoky Lake, including offering loans to physicians not otherwise available to them when establishing operations in the Town of Smoky Lake.

Such services would be provided by the Corporation in the Town of Smoky Lake and the surrounding area including the County of Smoky Lake. They are intended to address shortfalls in the services available to residents of the Town and those who may consider visiting or relocating to the Town in the future. The Corporation does not intend to compete with or undermine existing businesses or services already provided by the private sector.

We look forward to hearing from Town residents with respect to these plans and opportunities for the Corporation. Residents will have the opportunity to make representations to the Town during a Public Hearing.

THEREFORE, TAKE NOTICE THAT pursuant to Sections 230 and 606 of the Municipal Government Act, public hearings to consider the proposed Bylaw will be held:
