Ukrainian heritage

Smoky Lake and its surrounding farm community include a significant population with Ukrainian heritage. As early as 1891, Ukrainian pioneers started coming to Alberta, and over the years many settled in the Smoky Lake area. The descendants of their families represent a large part of our community today. With organized Ukrainian folk dancing and pierogi suppers, the community embraces its Ukrainian culture.

Many have families affected by the war and we are proud to be doing everything we can to help.

About Ukrainian pioneers

As pioneers arrived in the country, they would need to stop at the closest community and purchase a horse and the needed supplies.
This picture closely captures that moment.
